The Florence Symphony Orchestra and Masterworks Choir will debut Sarah Horick’s requiem, “Beyond the Years,” in a world premiere performance tonight.
 
The requiem is a tribute to Charleston’s Emanuel Nine, the nine people who were murdered at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in June 2015.
 
Sarah Horick, a Charleston native, composed the requiem as a tribute to the Emanuel Nine as well as the surviving members of their families. The piece incorporates lines from a poem by African-American poet Paul Dunbar, rhetoric from Rev. Chainey, a pastor of the church after the Civil War, and Barack’s Obama eulogy for Rev. After a tragedy in Charleston, a requiem in Florence

The shock and horror of the Emanuel AME Church shootings in 2015 in Charleston opened a raw gash in American society, particularly in South Carolina.

Composer Sarah Horick, a Charleston native who now resides in Washington, D.C., is hoping to put a little salve on that wound with "Beyond the Years," her new musical requiem for orchestra and chorus.

The unique, five-movement work will debut at 7:30 p.m. on March 27 at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center in Florence with a world-premiere performance by the Florence Symphony Orchestra and the Masterworks Choir.
