The Florence Symphony Youth Orchestra

The FSYO is a talented group of approximately 40 students in grades 6-12, primarily from Florence but including members from the extended Pee Dee Region. The FSYO offers students an important ensemble outlet for their musical abilities, which have a demonstrated benefit on academic outcomes. Students who learn to play an instrument develop advanced motor skills, learn to socialize with all types of people and obtain a respect of history, hard-work and the importance of practice, perseverance and patience.

In addition, through its outreach, the FSYO exposes thousands of other children in the area to classical music and orchestral instruments. For many local youth, it is the only such exposure they will enjoy during their formative years.

The FSYO is a branch of the Florence Symphony Orchestra.

The FSYO is under Mr. Richard Hyman for the 2017-18 season.  This is his first year with the FSYO.  Mr. Hyman teaches music at Sneed Middle School in Florence. He is a recent college graduate and extremely relatable to his students. In addition, Mr. Hyman recognizes the importance of music education and outreach within the Florence community.
